Underpinning

Existing foundations can settle due to increased loads, changes in soil properties, or nearby excavations. Underpinning can be achieved with deep foundation elements such as micropiles and Macropiles™, jacked piers and helical piers, jet grouted soilcrete columns, compaction grout columns, cement grouting or with chemical grouting, or traditional pit underpinning with concrete and mortar. Hayward Baker has experience with the full range of underpinning techniques to provide underpinning for structures.

A portion of two concrete barracks structures under construction at the Great Lakes Naval Base was constructed on soft backfill placed in a previous basement. As construction proceeded, the backfill material began to compress and cause the buildings to settle. Hayward Baker designed and constructed a micropile underpinning system that would stabilize the settling footings and could be used to relevel the one fully constructed building.
