Slurry Walls
Slurry Wall construction is the excavation below-grade through stabilizing slurry which supports the excavation walls and prevents caving and water intrusion and the replacement of slurry with purpose-designed backfill.

Slurry Wall Types
  • Cut-Off (Barrier)
  • Diaphragm (Structural)
Slurry Excavation Support is Provided by
  • Hydraulic pressure of the heavyweight slurry acting against the impermeable filter cake established on the trench walls.
Shallow Excavation
Deep Excavation

Slurry Cut-Off Wall Applications
  • Water control for deep excavations
  • Cut-off curtains for dams and levees
  • Contaminated groundwater control
  • Gas barriers for landfills
Cut-Off Wall Design Steps
  • Establish geotechnical conditions
  • Establish hydraulic conditions
  • Define required barrier flow rate per unit of surface area
  • Establish wall geometry and properties
  • Test design backfill mix
Diaphragm (Structural) Slurry Wall Applications
  • Retaining walls
  • Heavy foundations
  • Combination retaining wall-foundations
  • Combination retaining wall-water control
  • Associated with the up-down construction technique as basement walls
Diaphragm Slurry Wall Design Steps

1. Establish geotechnical conditions
2. Define adjacent foundations
3. Establish lateral load diagram
4. Define bracing-tieback scheme
5. Design wall for maximum loads
6. Plan panel sizes and sequence of construction
7. Detail reinforcing steel and breakouts
8. Predict movements
9. Plan instrumentation

Slurry Wall Quality Control
  • Excavation-replacement balance
  • Depth and width measurements
  • Foundation material check
  • Slurry quality tests
  • Concrete quality check
